This girl is going... all the places!

Today’s take FIVE... women

Today is International Woman’s Day!

This week was the last market day that our family will participate in. It’s a right of passage for grade Seven students at our school. Grade 7 is a year of transition to high school, life and the glorious mess that is just being 13.

The concept is simple... each group of students is given $100 to create, market and sell a chosen item for market day. The market is set up in the gym. On market day family, friends and students come to sample and purchase their wares. All profits, less the group loan from this project are donated to Opportunity International.

Opportunity International does incredible work supporting women across the globe to gain financial independence with support to start and build their own business. 10.7 MILLION people have been supported by this organization to support these people to find a path out from under the grip of poverty. They offer small business loans, insurance, training etc. Whatever is needed to meet the need.

Today being Woman’s Day makes this photo extra special for me. This is my girl, learning to empower who she is! Be proud of being female and being taught to empower who she is. She is wise beyond her years and I’m so very proud of who she is growing into. She’s learning who she is.

Her journey does not define her. Her success and failure will be up to her. She, like each of us has the same choice. Remain or rise up.

This photo represents the value in teaching children to understand the value and hard work it takes to earn a dollar. It allows them the opportunity in a small way to begin to understand the idea of business and how to generate revenue. This project is a labour of love to engage students and get their minds thinking globally while learning valuable skills in their own back yard.

Happy International Woman’s Day to each and every woman who is out there working hard to remap their path. There is something beautiful woven into each story of a woman trying to change the narrative of their story. Women are bold. Women are brave. Women are capable. society as a whole has a lot of work to do to correct the way gender impacts success especially amongst people impacted by poverty.

It’s hard to change your story when you don’t have the tools. Opportunity International gives Opportunity to people who’s dream is to Rise up.

Opportunity is everything. We can all support each other in big and small ways everyday to encourage And empower one another.
